Your home should be a sanctuary from the outside world, a place you can relax and enjoy your family and free time. Yet for many of us, lack of organization around the home can turn a sanctuary into a stressful environment. Since April is Stress Awareness Month, it's the perfect time to get organized and create a calm, peaceful spaces throughout your home. Here are three tips for stress-free organizing.

 

1. Study your habits for a week or two and analyze what works best for your lifestyle. Organizing is not a one-size-fits-all process, so what works for some people may not work for you. Some people are more visual than others, for example, so open shelving and ways to easily display items may work better for them when it comes to organizing. If your family uses the garage door to enter the house instead of the front door, it makes sense to put shoe storage and hooks for coats where they'll be used frequently, instead of the front entryway where they'll be inconvenient. Set things up to work with your habits and lifestyle. 

 

2. More stuff equals more stress when it comes to organizing, which is why it's good to sort through your belongings and donate anything you no longer want or need. It's a priceless tip that bears repeating: if you don't need it, use it, or want it, get rid of it! Keep a bin for donation by the garage door as a visual reminder to toss it in the car and drive to a donation center at the end of each month. Organizing can be stress-free if there's less to actually organize, plus you'll feel great about donating!

 

3. It's easier to stay organized once you're organized, which means organization "maintenance" is just as important as getting organized in the first place. It's no secret that procrastination leads to stress, and the same is true for putting off those daily organizing tasks. Instead of letting them pile up, take 10 minutes every day (yes, just 10!) to put away things that are out of place, sort the mail pile, recycle magazines, etc. Doing these little tasks every day, even when we're tired, make it so much easier to maintain a beautiful, organized home without the stress of long, rushed deep-cleans.

 

There you have it.  Set up the organizational flow of your home to work with your habits, abolish clutter by purging and donating, and invest a few minutes daily to maintain the solution!  Make some time this month to identify potential stressors around your home, and then organize with gusto so you can de-stress and live your best life at home!
