It's time to start thinking about our favorite spring pastime: spring cleaning! Spring cleaning can seem overwhelming at first with so much to do; however, if you just focus on one area of your home at a time and stick to a few basic steps, you'll have it done before the spring songbirds begin their serenades!

This week we're cleaning out our closets for spring, and here are five helpful steps to get your new season off to a great start.

1. Empty

First things first: empty out your closet. It really does help the cleaning and reorganizing process if you pull it all out and take stock of the space you have. Dust off shelves and other surfaces. Replace shelf paper and vacuum so you'll have a fresh, clean space to refill.

2. Rotate

Sort through the clothes and accessories you took out of the closet and put winter-only items in airtight bags or containers. If you'd already rotated your wardrobe last season, now's the time to bring out your warmer weather clothes. Keeping a seasonal rotation for your wardrobe frees up space in your closet and gives this season's clothes room to breathe.

3. Sort

Now is a great time to dig through your closet and decide what to keep and what to donate or toss. While rotating out your winter clothes, take stock of what you didn't wear this past season. Put anything unworn or forgotten in a box to donate, and toss any items that are beyond repair.

4. Organize

Now that you've cleaned out your closet and refined your wardrobe, start loading spring clothing and accessories into your closet. And here's a great "pre-sort" tip that will save time next season: while loading the closet, face the hangers inward. Whenever you wear an item put it back with the hanger facing outward. When it's time to rotate your wardrobe for the next season, you'll know exactly which items were left unworn over the past six months by the position of the hanger. Consider donating those unworn items.

5. Accessorize

One of the best ways to keep your closet organized and functional all year is to install a few closet organizing accessories like shelf dividers and shoe shelves to keep things in order and looking nice. Shelf dividers keep stacks of neatly folded sweaters from falling over and handbags at the ready; and shoe shelves keep shoes off the floor where they can get piled up and jumbled.

Now take a step back and admire your handiwork. Ahhh, don't you just love a freshly cleaned closet? And it wasn't difficult at all!
